I used a David Bowie technique and this is what happened + We Become Light

It’s week #4 of my songwriting challenge and did I just write a sci-fi song about angels coming to save the Earth?

Hi friend,

There is one technique that I have used since I started writing songs when I was twelve. I have used it to write poems too, and without knowing it, it was one of David Bowie’a favourite lyric techniques too.

The technique is quite simple: You take any text and start skimming and when a word or words give you a visceral response you write them down. You do the same with numerous texts, so you don’t end up copying. Eventually you have a whole list of words and maybe even sentences that you put together based on the words you found.

After creating this long list, I go to the piano, start a chord progression and start singing the words on my list. Sometimes I change things, sometimes I add things, and other times I just used the words on my list to get me started.

This is a way to really bypass your conscious mind and get to your subconscious. By allowing you to find words based on a visceral response and not on any form of logic or rational thinking, you allow your subconscious to speak for you.

Sometimes, when I do this technique, something revelatory about myself comes out. Other times, like this time, you get a psychedelic song that you can’t really figure out what is about.

I think the song is about angels coming to Earth and saving us all… because the human race needs saving.

But what do you think? What do you feel this song is about?

Here are the lyrics:

I’m following the footsteps of ghosts

There’s a light from Venus hiding low

Fallen stars like carpets so soft

Sleepless angels wondering the skies

There’s a power stirring in me

Ohh

Waiting for their innocent pray

Are human hearts beginning to rust

Gauging when to leap when to pounce

A spiritless crawl takes them down

There’s a power stirring in me

Ohh

A rumbling is growing

The stars spread their dust

On the dark skies

We become light

My atoms have shattered

Now orbiting the Earth

There’s a shadow

But we become light

Ooh

We’re falling while the dust settles down

We’re nowhere, everywhere and all around

Landing on our feet on solid ground

We’re here to stay, we’ll convert our light to sound

There’s a power stirring in me

Ohh

A rumbling is growing

The stars spread their dust

On the dark skies

We become light

My atoms have shattered

Now orbiting the Earth

There’s a shadow

But we become light

Ooh

I can’t wait to find out what next week’s song will be about, it’s always exciting.

Tell me…

Do you think the Earth needs saving?

What do you think this song is about?

Have you ever created something you loved, but had no clue where it came from?

What are your favourite lines in the song?

I’d love to know in the comments!
